With the current world climate holding Redblacks players out of the facilities, they have been left to their own devices to maintain themselves for the upcoming season.

The start of the 2020 CFL season has been delayed and with an unknown start date, the players need to be in-game shape, and more importantly, stay in game shape.

Redblacks players have taken this time to focus on some different aspects of their game, but the majority of CFL players don’t have access to a gym right now. Workouts have been difficult, but players must make do with what they have right now.

One of the most common ways that players have been keeping in shape is by running. With restrictions allowing for people to go on a walk or go for a run, it has been a workaround that many players have been using, and Redblacks players are no exception.

“I’m doing a lot of running. I’m trying to stay in the best shape I can. We will get through this,” said DeVonte Dedmon, receiver and kick returner for the Redblacks.

Others have been doing general workouts and making the best out of the situation that they are in.

“I’ve been working out and keeping my hopes up for the upcoming season,” said Redblacks standout linebacker, Avery Williams.

One of the more interesting routines comes courtesy of Marco Dubois.

“I have a new job in HR so I do my nine to five Monday to Friday while doing six workouts a week. I train in the streets three times a week, and I have a home gym where I train three times a week as well. It’s a lot of improvised training, but I still put in the work every day,” said Dubois.

Along with the information shared, he passed along a couple of videos showing examples of his training.

In an interview with Justin Howell on the 13th Man Podcast hosted by Shane Ryan and myself, Howell talked about what he was doing to stay ready.

“Thankfully, I have a bunch of equipment at my house. There is a nice home gym with everything I need. My trainer, Nick Wescott adjusted some things and modified my programming, but for the most part, it has been pretty good. I’ve been able to do most of the stuff that I was going to do before. It has been an adjustment for sure,” said Howell.

You can hear the rest of that interview here, or anywhere you find your podcast.

Right now, no one knows what the start of the season is going to look like. It is unknown if there will be much of a training camp, or one at all. These workouts that players are doing right now could be the difference maker in who goes far this season, especially if the season is shortened.
